Captain Phillips |
Tom Hanks, former Commander of "Apollo 13," a Captain in the World War II "Saving Private Ryan," a conductor on "The Polar Express," a United States Senator in "Charlie Wilson's War," and a prison guard in "The Green Mile," takes on the role of a Captain of the Merchant Vessel (MV) Maersk Alabama.
The Maersk Alabama, if you recall was the ship that Somali Pirates boarded on April 8, 2009. Captain Richard Phillips allowed himself to be taken captive in the hopes that his crew would be able to escape. A four day stand-off ensued after the pirates took a lifeboat and Phillips with them.
Paul Greengrass of the Jason Bourne franchise is directing this adaptation of Richard Phillips and Steven Tatty's book, "A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea"
With the success of films like "Argo," and "Zero Dark 30," the "Based on True Events" genre of filmmaking seems to be alive and well. Screenwriter Billy Ray ("The Hunger Games", "Flightplan"), adapts Richard's book for the big screen with all the fact and fiction that make seeing these type of films worthwhile.
Sony/Columbia releases "Captain Phillips" upon viewers on October 11th, 2013
